How Often Should You Get a Haircut?

It's one of those questions that sounds simple but doesn't have a single right answer. Some men go every fortnight, others every couple of months. Neither is wrong — it depends entirely on your style, your hair type, and how polished you want to look on any given day.

Here's a straightforward guide to help you figure out the right schedule for you.

Short Styles and Fades: Every 2–3 Weeks

If you wear a skinfade, buzz cut, or anything with tight sides, you already know how quickly it grows out. A fresh fade looks razor-sharp for about a week, then gradually softens. By week three, the blending starts to lose its definition and the neckline gets fuzzy.

For most clients who wear these styles, a visit every two to three weeks keeps things looking intentional rather than overgrown. If you have a special event or want to look especially sharp, booking a few days beforehand rather than the day before gives the cut a chance to settle naturally.

Medium-Length Styles: Every 4–5 Weeks

Styles like the textured crop, quiff, or side part sit in a comfortable middle ground. They have enough length on top to tolerate some growth, but the sides and back still need regular tidying to keep the shape.

Four to five weeks is the sweet spot for most of these cuts. You'll notice the shape starting to go a bit soft around week four — the sides puff out slightly, the neckline loses its line, and the overall silhouette starts to round off. A quick trim resets everything.

Longer Styles: Every 6–8 Weeks

If you're growing your hair out or wearing it at a longer length — think curtain fringes, slicked-back styles, or anything past the ears — you have more breathing room between visits. The shape changes more gradually with longer hair, and a little extra growth is part of the style.

That said, even long hair benefits from regular maintenance. Split ends, uneven growth, and loss of shape are all things a good barber can sort without taking off significant length. Think of it as a reshape rather than a cut.

Every six to eight weeks is a sensible starting point. Some men stretch it to ten or twelve weeks, which is fine as long as you're happy with how it looks in the interim.

Hair Type Makes a Difference

The timings above are general guidelines. Your hair's natural texture and growth rate can shift things in either direction.

Seasonal Considerations

It might sound odd, but the time of year can influence your ideal schedule. In summer, shorter styles are more popular and hair tends to grow slightly faster with increased blood flow. You might find yourself booking a little more often between May and September.

In winter, many men let things grow a bit longer — partly for warmth, partly because hats and hoods make grow-out less visible. There's nothing wrong with relaxing your schedule by a week or two during the colder months.

The Real Test: How Does It Look on Day One vs Day Twenty?

Here's a simple way to figure out your personal rhythm. After your next cut, pay attention to when you first think "this could do with a tidy." That moment is your natural threshold. Book your next appointment for a few days before that point, and you'll always look sharp without overthinking it.

Most of our clients settle into a routine after two or three visits. Once you find your rhythm, you can book recurring appointments and never have to think about it again.
